Obituary for Antoinette DelMastro

Antoinette DelMastro (nee Lattari) of South Philadelphia, passed away on July 6, 2017. She was 85 years of age.

Humble and genuine, Antoinette was always there for her family and friends. She was born in Santa Caterina dello lonio, a town in the province of Catanzaro in the Calabria region of southern Italy on February 20, 1932. She and her family moved to the United States in 1962 and settled in South Philadelphia, with other family that had come before.

Antoinette's kitchen was the heart of the house where she would create fantastic food with few ingredients and lots of love. It was there where family and friends would come together, while she, in the background, quietly communicating her affection through food, like her famous Eggplant Parmesan.

The cellar was reminiscent of the "old world", where Soppressata and Capicola would hang and hundreds of jars of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, olives... you name it, were canned and stored, all prepared with loving care by Antoinette's "Golden Hands".

Shopping on 9th Street looking for bargains, cooking, celebrating the holidays and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, were some of the great passions of her life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is the beloved wife of the late Giuseppe; devoted mother of Maria (John) Cooney, Nicholas, Antonio, Caterina (Nassim Saghour); Josephine DelMastro-Chinchillo (Anthony) and the late Rocco. loving grandmother of John, Joseph and Cristina; loving sister of Severina and Francesco; also survived by a brother in law, sisters in law, special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
