Obituary for Janet Rita DiMeo

Janet DiMeo (nee Semoni) was born in South Philadelphia on November 10, 1937 to Carmella and Frederick Semoni. She passed away peacefully from dementia on February 14, 2023 at the age of 85. Janet is survived by her three sons: Michael, Steven, and Joseph DiMeo; five grandchildren: Maria, Michael Jr., Peter, Veronica, and Grace; daughters-in-law, Antoinette and Tammy; and great-granddaughter, Annastasia.

Raised as an only child by her mother following the death of her father around 1941, Janet attended St. Monica’s School, then Hallahan High School for Girls. In 1957, she married Joseph DiMeo of West Philadelphia. They lived in her birth home on 16th and Oregon, until the family moved to the 2500 block of Colorado Street in Girard Estates in 1970. She was a proud stay-at-home mother and housekeeper, with her mother Carmella by her side. Sadly, she lost her husband, Joe, in 1995 to pancreatic cancer and her mother to Alzheimer's just a few weeks later.

Janet will be remembered as a loyal, loving wife, mother, and friend. She preferred a simple life at home rather than travel or outside activities and enjoyed having friends visit for card games. Janet loved playing the lottery and visiting casinos, watching reruns of Golden Girls, going to a diner with her cousin Rita, and putting butter on just about everything. Her particular brand of sarcasm was always felt by her three sons who knew how to get her goat. She was a pure soul who never had an ego and a faithful Catholic who attended Sunday mass regularly..

Janet took residence at Sunrise Senior Living of Granite Run following a fall in 2019. Dementia gradually stole her mind and ultimately took over her body. But her sarcastic glare and sly smile were always present when her sons would visit and kid with her. Her presence will be missed by all those who knew her.

Services will be held at St. Richard’s Catholic Church, 18th and Pollock Streets, on Tuesday morning, February 21, 2023, starting at 9:30 to 10:15 AM. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 AM, followed by Christian burial at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name be made to The Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
